On some level, I did. You can't really escape it entirely while visiting the island while the eruption is ongoing. But during this picture it was mostly blowing away (north/north-west).

There’s a couple overlooks in the National park. If you have a car, it’s pretty easy to navigate since it’s one main road that covers the park. You should have phone service is most places too, so you can look up where to go.

The big thing to keep in mind, everybody else also wants to see this, especially at night. Just after sunset is the most popular times. The National park service recommends visiting after 9pm, after traffic dies down. When this volcano start to erupt again recently, the line of cars to get in was basically a parking lot. Over an hour wait for parking apparently

We did the devastation trail walk last night around midnite, still plenty of people checking it out at that hour.

Does anyone know how far it’s spread this time and if it took any homes?

The lava is only in Halemaumau Crater at the summit of Kilauea in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. This eruption, almost any crater rim viewing site has clear sights of the lava lake and fountains.

Murph785 t1_j5grxl6 wrote

This eruption has been entirely confined to the summit caldera and has not affected any island residents besides the VOG that has been collecting on the Kona side.

If you’re wondering about the Mauna Loa eruption of last year, the lava flow stopped short of affecting the saddle road highway and ended. No homes, infrastructure, or privately owned properties were affected.

Planning a trip to Hawaii in April this year. Really want to see it.

Whether or not it's still erupting, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park really is amazing and worth seeing! And, who knows -- maybe lava will still be flowing in April and you can see that, too!

Did you go during the day then? If yes, it makes a huge difference going at night vs. day. We went during the day first and heard about how amazing it was at night, so we made the ~ 2.5 hr roundtrip drive again from our rental... Definitely worth seeing at night!

Gorgeous photo! Volcanoes are one of Earth’s few wonders that absolutely terrifies me, yet I still find gorgeous to see (in pictures at least)

Also going in March. Any travel restrictions or any other effects from eruption on island?

we_should_be_nice t1_j5i51x7 wrote

I was there exactly one month before this eruption started and like a few days after the other eruption started dying down. I saw the tiniest small hint of a glow of lava. The timing of my trip was awful for lava reasons, but great for everything else.

mjconns OP t1_j5ic8mt wrote

No restrictions in general; some viewing sections are closed and where you can walk/view is clearly outlined.

The most notable thing was how hazy the western side of the island was. If the irruption is still going, you won’t get very good stargazing at night. Which I was kinda disappointed about. But the lava made up for it!

If it is still flowing 100% and go at night. Visit the NP during the day also, but see the lava at night. It’s significantly more stunning.

Basaltic lava flows slow because of it's low gas content, bit it covers large areas, forming basaltic provinces, I've seen basalt on microscope, it looks very cool

Do it!! You have to! I was just there this past Thanksgiving (literally the day before the most recent significant eruption which was an experience in itself just driving around the island seeing the red sky all the way from the kona airport) and we went up to volcano park 3x.

First time to view during the day. We walked around a lot and saw the steam vents.

Day 2 we hiked across the big dormant crater that is kind of near the eruption. This doest look like much. But once you're actually THERE, wow this place feels like you are literally walking across mars (minus death heat of the sun)

Day 3 we went to the viewing spot at night. Amazinggggggg. The glow!!! W-O-W

Its honestly hard to describe or photograph with any lense just how amazing it all is. I cant ever find words. I was and stil am, in awe of it all. For me, seeing such amazing natural things like that really put things into perspective. Mother nature is truely amazing and us people are so small with our dumb little every day problems 🙂

Its just... you will never see anything like it. I think everyone should see it at least once in their lifetime.

Oh it was the opposite weather for me lol. Day time steam vent viewing was so windy, it was literally pushing me around. Felt like pele was trying to push me off a cliff! Lol
