Kilauea volcano is actively erupting, this was taken last week around 8pm. It was smoky/foggy and the lava light up the surrounding light -- it was amazing to see!

I hope you didn't breathe in the vog.

On some level, I did. You can't really escape it entirely while visiting the island while the eruption is ongoing. But during this picture it was mostly blowing away (north/north-west).

There’s a couple overlooks in the National park. If you have a car, it’s pretty easy to navigate since it’s one main road that covers the park. You should have phone service is most places too, so you can look up where to go.

The big thing to keep in mind, everybody else also wants to see this, especially at night. Just after sunset is the most popular times. The National park service recommends visiting after 9pm, after traffic dies down. When this volcano start to erupt again recently, the line of cars to get in was basically a parking lot. Over an hour wait for parking apparently

Is it still erupting now? I'll be going to The National Park next week for the very first time.

If it’s still going, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park’s Devastation Trail leads right to the viewing area.

The lava is only in Halemaumau Crater at the summit of Kilauea in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. This eruption, almost any crater rim viewing site has clear sights of the lava lake and fountains.

I was there exactly one month before this eruption started and like a few days after the other eruption started dying down. I saw the tiniest small hint of a glow of lava. The timing of my trip was awful for lava reasons, but great for everything else.
