I’m sad I didn’t know the word Sneffels until just now

It’s a great name. The mountain is actually named after an Icelandic volcano, Snæfellsjökull, but got a shortened version probably for ease of pronunciation.

And that volcano is famous from being featured in Jules Verne’s Journey to the Center of the Earth

You should climb it. It’s got arguably the best view of any mountain in Colorado.

That is great. Views of Dallas and teakettle and then all the way out to the Handies and uncompaghre area and Wilson group etc.

But I would like to nominate pyramid peak or snowmass as mountains with dank ass views.

While it's highly accessible it's also one of the most sketchy hikes I have ever done. So much loose rock and too many people. I'm shocked more people don't die in the two main gulleys

It was cloudy most of the day following the overnight storm, and another storm was building for the night as the sunset approached. I hiked along a forest road from my campsite down this valley to reach this viewpoint where I had seen some amazing fall colors coming in. I was halfway here when a single ray of light started to hit the bottom of the mountain, and I knew it wouldn't last, so I ran to get to the nearest colors. The light inched upward and by the time I finally got into position it was almost gone, but I managed to capture it as it beamed across mighty Mt Sneffels with it's snow coated ridges. A few shots later and it was gone. As I walked back to my tent the first drops of the storm began to fall, promising fresh snow for the morning.

What time of year was this did you just take this picture the other day? I love the colors

I would wager this was probably early/mid October. It's snowy now.

My favorite 14'er - the only one I've bothered to climb more than once - is such a wonderful landmark on the way south from Montrose. This is a beautiful capture!

One of my favorite hikes was sneffels via blue lakes, coming in on the long approach from the north. Such a secluded and special piece of wilderness, and beautifully captured here.

Did you get to Yankee Boy Basin?

SundayRaid t1_iy16p4s wrote

My family rented a UTV and went up Yankee Boy Basin close to the peak of Mt Sneffles as part of our vacation out west a few years ago. It was the highlight of the trip.

I just started listening to Jules Verne's Journey to the Center of the Earth as an audiobook and this is literally the mountain they talk about all the time. Never had heard of it before that

Mute_Monkey t1_ixzzkax wrote

No, in the book they’re referring to the volcano (any crater of which is hilariously completely covered in a glacier and thus inaccessible) in Iceland.

Man, Sneffels is so damn fickle during fall colors. I'm think I'm about 0 for 10 shooting around this general spot over the past two fall seasons. :/
