Happy thursday/friday all :)

This view was taken on my way back from going to the rim of this volcano.(it is actually quite safe, trust me :)

This volcano - called Yasur volcano - is located in Vanuatu (on an Island called Tanna). It is currently one of the longest erupting stratovolcano (if not potentially the longest). Some fun facts:

  1. The glow of the volcano attracted Captain James Cook on the first European journey to the island in 1774. It is said that he tried to hike the volcano, without success.
  2. The mountain is a sacred area for the John Frum cargo cult. Members of the cult revere John Frum, a WWII messenger who is said to be bringing a mountain of wealth to the island by American forces. They believe he resides in Mount Yasur with his countrymen.

I have taken this photo using the following: Fujifilm GFX50s with ultrawide angle lens (23mm).

Hope you enjoy this photo. I also posted few month back a video of my drone flying on top of it, in case somebody is interested to see the chaos it can produce. (e.g. view from my drone (e.g. https://www.reddit.com/r/nextfuckinglevel/comments/malfpo/the_day_a_volcano_almost_ate_my_drone/)

Let me know if you have any other question

I got married at the summit of Yasur back on Dec 17 2006! I’ve been to Vanuatu 5 or 6 times over the years. Tanna is amazing (and so is Ambrym). Great photo!

Thanks. Ambrym unfortunately is sleeping I think.

It’s been mostly quiet since the big 2018 eruption. The summit collapsed so much that the place where we used to set up our base camp no longer exists. There’s been a little bit of lava lake activity, but it seems very sporadic and barely a whisper of its former glory. I have descended down to the bottom of both Benbow crater and Marum crater (I used to help guide some rope descents there). I’ve been patiently waiting for it to come back to life…. still waiting.

The walk to the summit of this is a bitch. Did you notice how hot the ground was as you went up? Was there in like 2019

It was alright actually. We paid the tribe to bring us halfway :)

I imagine his last name is what happened to him after hiking up the mountain.
