You did it! I make my lock screen cool images from this subreddit and always try to find one I like better than the current. Well, you win. This will be my lock screen background until I find a photo on here that I like more.

Looks like you guys have the smoke too. We did a big Banff-Jasper-Kootney road trip this summer and the photos really don’t begin to capture The majesty of the area! But fantastic job catching as much as you did!

Every moment there is a line of 10-20 people waiting to take a shot from this viewpoint. Although less than on the reddit lake. Because you have to take an hour long boat trip and it's not cheap.

Damn, that's nice. I love the range of shades and other qualities of the reflections, like how the reeds and stones gently break it up without revealing or drawing attention to what's under the surface.

It's a shame that the haze is seemingly wildfire smoke and not morning mist, but what can you do?

What's the travel time like to get there from civilisation, is it a multiday hike?

Its just about an hour drive from Jasper, Alberta to Maligne Lake, which is where Spirit Island is. As someone mentioned, you need to take a lake cruise to get there. The island is a sacred place for the Stoney Nakoda people. Tourists are not allowed on the island.

When was this taken? Is the haze wildfire smoke? It makes for a great picture but devastating to the natural beauty.

Finally got my parents (in their 60s) to venture out of their home state and visit me up here in Canada. Drove them a few hours out through Banff and made their lives. It's been five days and my dad is still dumping photos he took of all the mountains and lakes into our family chat. My wife and I take it for granted that we live within two hours of the Banff border. Now that our toddler is older (and very much into the outdoors) we're going to make it a point to visit multiple times next year. I haven't been up to Jasper yet.

Yardash t1_issjyqy wrote

Been there a couple times, you have to take a boat that runs up the lake. 100% well worth the trip. (Please ignore the crazy news coming from Alberta these days, most of us are as bat shit crazy as our new premier makes us out to be)
If you ever go also stop at Maligne Cayon which is on the road up to Maligne Lake (where Spirit Island is located)

Also fun fact, Spirit Island isn't actually an island, its only cut off from shore during the spring run off, I can't remember the technical term for this.

Jasper is a beautiful place.

I went there in the summer of 2015 to visit friends and it was amazing.

I was scared shirtless of all the wildlife though.

Was in banff first week of october. It wasnt empty, but we werent bumping into anyone. Parking lots are one thing, but it seemed most would head out after a mile of walking. Gotta go in the off seasons (fall and spring), i guess. We avoided boats, though.

My wife and I went to Maligne Lake one evening hoping to kayak. We were told kayak rentals conclude around 4 pm each day so we decided to spend the $70ish dollars each to do this boat tour instead. We weren’t psyched about the cost but decided “When in Alberta.” The trip was totally worth it and the history behind Spirit Island was very cool to learn about. Out of our twelve days in the Canadian Rockies, this was of the top highlights. Highly recommend!

Thank you! I have a Fujifilm X-T3 and used a 10-24mm lens. I did a few edits in post processing since it was there was quite a bit of smoke from a forest fire in Jasper at the time

taytaylundin OP t1_iswaok9 wrote

Thanks so much! Most of it was from doing a long exposure shot to smooth out the water but I used some dehaze and increased the color vibrancy since there was a lot of smoke from a forest fire at the time.
