That's the Schreckhorn in the center. And in the middle left, you can see the old mountain station of the Wetterhorn cable car, no longer active which leads to the SAC Gleckstein mountain hut, a gorgeous spot!

My wife and I summitted Schreck Schilthorn on the hiking trail from Lauterbrunnen. Four to five hours my ass. We were pushing at the top to catch the last gondola down.

DieLegende42 t1_itx2r8a wrote

There's a few things that don't quite check out here:

>on the hiking trail

You don't hike up the Schreckhorn. It's a serious mountain that requires rock climbing of UIAA degree III at the very least

>from Lauterbrunnen

You wouldn't ascend the Schreckhorn from Lauterbrunnen. You'd just have to cross into the Grindelwald valley first

>Four to five hours

Obviously not. It's almost 2000 metres above the closest hut, nevermind Lauterbrunnen, which is another 1500 metres further down and 15 kilometres away as the bird flies

>the last gondola down

There are no gondolas anywhere near the Schreckhorn

I heavily suspect you are not actually talking about the Schreckhorn.

22

appenz t1_itx7bc1 wrote

Maybe Schilthorn? Also starts with "Sch" and is doable in a half day from Lauterbrunnen.

And 100% agree that he wasn't talking about Schreckhorn. I have hiked in the Bernese Alps and done some of the easier technical climbs. Schreckhorn is one of the hardest peaks in the area.

16

buckeye837 t1_itxgf8n wrote

Schilthorn is probably it. That's the one with the James Bond restaurant at the top

gregorianballsacks t1_ityx9xr wrote

Yep. Hiked a lot growing up and in my 20s. NW US into Montana.

Switzerland humbled me and my husband. Our Intro/warmup hike ended up being our only hike. Not only were we beat to hell by the trail that took much longer than we were told, our equipment gave out. His shoe broke. My walking stick ate shit. Our backpacks both ripped. All my research was fuck all. I'll join a tour next time with older people instead of trying to figure it out solo. Shits wild. And the $$$ is no fucking joke.

Humbled. And after driving through the country no wonder they are "neutral". Ain't nobody gonna attack that shit.

2

Demonweed t1_itxfj0n wrote

FUN FACT: Due to the constant risk of avalanche and strict noise ordinances, the only legal way to sing "All Star" on the Schreckhorn is to yodel it.

My wife and I hiked to the Glecksteinhütte this past summer .. nice hike and as always, gorgeous views! Many do it as a day hike, but staying at the hut is great for the sunset / sunrise views. Can't forget to mention how the meals at these huts are also always great!

Youtube-Gerger t1_itwp56z wrote

This is such a beautiful area in Switzerland but, I don't remember any place in Switzerland that is not beautiful. We we lived in Europe many, many decades ago we would ski in this area and would ski from Kliene Scheidegg to Grindelwald for lunch. We had a local instructor who loved just skiing through the mountains on trails to get to another town for a great meal.

TravelingTJ OP t1_itw8vw3 wrote

Wow that sounds absolutely incredible! I'd love to go skiing out there sometime in my life, it seems lovely!

We were lucky to live in Germany for 3 years. This was so long ago that we were in West Germany. We got to ski in Switzerland, Austria, and Germany. It was an amazing experience. Especially glacier skiing in August.
