Taken in Alpe di Siusi in the Dolomites and looking towards the towering peaks of Langkofel, jutting spectacularly out of the rolling fields below. It's an impressive sight at any time of day, but especially so when the evening sun lights up the mountains with a warm glow. One of the best views in Europe, it's a must see if you're ever in the area.

I was only in this area for a day but had a great lunch with an incredible view at the Malga Contrin (just along from where this was taken). If you're traveling around the Dolomites, I would say the hike to lago di sorapis, lago di braies, lago di carezza and Seceda were the most memorable. It's all beautiful though, just try and get to places as early as possible before they get too busy. Have a great time!

Tres Cime is possibly the most beautiful hike I've ever done, but hiking to rifugio alpe di Tires through alpe di siusi is definitely right behind that. Staying in or at least getting lunch at one of the rifugios is also a magical way to soak it in.

What's difficult to grasp from these images is just how high these cliffs are towering over their surroundings.
You cannot understand the scale until you've been at the foot of it

I always thought that the magical quality of light in Italy was a fairy tale cooked up by renaissance artists to justify travel. Then I actually went there and was astonished to see IRL views I was familiar with from European Master painters. Thought it was glamorized/phony in the paintings. Nope! Italy is truly magical.

I've stayed twice in the Dolomites, and many other places in the world too. It's the only spot where both I and Mrs. 1LW have considered making a semi-regular (like, once-a-year) destination. The scenery, the hiking trails, the unpretentious locals, the hearty food & wines... all 100% top-tier. (If they could only fix the peak-season traffic in the Val Gardena.)

Anyway, beautiful shot. I'm ready to go back.

What are you looking for? How experienced are you as a hiker? Are you interested also in the history of the region? There is so much to see and do there for all levels of difficulties.

Today I watched people go apnoe diving in a frozen lake. They drilled holes into the thick ice and then dove from hole to hole. You can have an easy walk, but you can also do a multi day hike with via ferratas in 800m high vertical walls. You can walk around the tre cime, or you can climb to the summit. Just to give you a perspective of the options you have.

What an absolutely beautiful photo.

Also some brilliant work on your website. Do you not sell all of your portfolio as prints? Love the one of a rock face amongst clouds in black & white, doesn't seem to be in the prints list though šŸ˜•

Please bear in mind that you can only drive up to the Seiser Alm very early in the morning (I believe 9 am) or very late (after maybe 5pm), then the road is closed for private traffic. Iā€˜m not sure about the times, but itā€™s something around that. Also you can only drive to Compatsch and have to walk or bike from there, if you donā€™t have a hotel up on the seiser alm.

My favorite is to drive up before sunrise, walk to a nice viewpoint and enjoy sunrise there. Then, after sunrise enjoy breakfast at one of the Almen/Malgas.

Whenever I see them I'm forced to wonder at the violence that created such beauty. The right side makes it clear these are uplift peaks, the craggy look says they are fairly young geologically. This is in the top 5 of places I want to go. And spending an afternoon watching the light on then change as the Sun drops sounds line a perfect use of time.

It was truly magical. Thunderstorms were the absolute best. We had a great view of the length of mountains from our bathroom window. A huge window with shutters you could sit on the edge of. The bathroom was quite big as well as it was a farmhouse that had been half converted from part of the attached barn. All tiled. When the thunder rumbled it would sound SO amazing in there, and the mountains lit up some with each strike depending on where the storm was. Just awesome! I always wanted to buy that house if it ever ended up on the market, but it was remodeled when we moved out and is probably a half a million euro now. I still keep an eye on the area though XD Italy would likely never let me immigrate there since Iā€™m fully disabled, but I may get lucky and my partner could find a civilian job at Aviano.

There are few places in the US that are awesome as that place, and certainly not many that are affordable enough to live at.

The last time I went snowboarding was on those mountains. I made the mistake of listening to the friend of my friend, who was one of those "I've been doing this my whole life, so I know the right way" kind of guys.

I had gone through the terrain park once, no issues. This fucknuckle of a turtle tit tells me how I'm supposed to land on a certain part of the jump to do it the right way and that I needed to be going faster to accomplish said goal.

Long story short, I hit the top of the jump wrong, and was basically in a "V" position 20ft in the air. I tried to break my fall a bit by putting my arm out, thinking I could at least get myself to roll with the fall. I bloodied my mouth, injured my shoulder, tweaked my back, smacked the holy fuck out of my hip....you get the idea. I didn't break anything, but I sure couldn't move my arm for a few days.

Its more political rather than not having looked at a map. Many people here say the same (of which im not one of). Our culture is basically a perfect 50/50 mix, pizza and risotto right next to schnitzel and knƶdl.

OP what sort of lens did you shoot with?

I am by no means a professional and I feel like whenever I'm out hiking my photos come back a little small, as if I cannot zoom in enough --but also, if I got close enough, I'd be at the mercy of the distorted parallax from the base of a mountain.

Our first trip there, 13 years ago, we based in Selva/Wolkenstein (every town has like two-three names, btw). So many great places to go and see, but for god's sake don't miss Seceda. Here are our pix, broken out by location: https://onelittleworld.zenfolio.com/f14888621

More recently, we based in the Val di Fassa in town called Vigo/Viche. Equally stunning area, but a little less jammed with tourists (thankfully). Once again, categorized by location, here are some pix: https://onelittleworld.zenfolio.com/dolomites2019

MODS: I realize these albums include shots that are not EarthPorn-ready, per rule 2, but this guy is looking for recommendations. With that in mind, I hope you'll let this post stand. Thank you.

They're actually dolomitized sponge reefs that grew around a volcanic core (a setting similar to the Bahamas today, but then with sponges instead of corals), mostly from the Triassic and Jurassic. The entire tectonic plate they're on got squashed between Europe and Africa, causing it to be uplifted, but without deforming it.

You're basically looking at what the seafloor looked like ~150 million years ago.

They want to reduce the traffic. The roads there are all very narrow one lane roads, and there are a lot of farmers who actually work there, so tourist cars are just a problem up there.

You can still get up by e.g. cable car
