I was just thinking of El Cap!!! It was one of my favorite hikes on a cross country trip.
I hiked it at night and watched the sun come up over the high plains…then hiked down and drove back to Florida.

Eh…. There’s also uplift happening because of the subduction zone. It’s not JUST sea level decline.
Musk-Order66 t1_jdap7te wrote
Wait so if those are from a coral reef… that’s a fossil?!
Gandoku t1_jdaqkai wrote
I think not exactly? But I'm not sure. This website explains it pretty well imo: https://www.paddleasia.com/karst-topography.htm
I'm not a geologist or anything but summarizing some of the info, Coral Polyps deposited the lime that turned into limestone ~100 million years ago. Halfway down that page is a photo of how the bottoms are more narrow than the tops on some formations as the sea levels went down and carved them out
JimJohnes t1_jdavgk5 wrote
It's not only coral reef, it was bottom of an ocean so it's everything that had calcium- and silica-based skeletal structure, including plankton and mollusks. All limestone and chalk is made of fossils, just not in intact state.
Elgin-Franklin t1_jdb18we wrote
The whole thing isn't a single fossil, but it is made of fossilised corals, shells, and carbonate minerals that are deposited in between them as mud.
If you can get yourself to any limestone outcrop near you there's a good chance you'll find fossils in them

I spent a few months there awhile back and really loved it. It’s beautiful. The food is delicious. Everything is inexpensive.
I’ve traveled a lot, and many places check those same boxes, but something that stood out to me is that Thai people are generally extremely friendly and down to earth. They seem to welcome foreigners and the chance to get to know new people, enjoy practicing English with visitors, have patience with you when you attempt to speak Thai to them, show you their culture, etc. I assume that Buddhism being the prominent spiritual mindset there has a big influence on that.
If you do end up going, and end up making friends with Thai folks, don’t try to pay for their meals. One of the most awkward moments I can remember from my time there was trying to pick up a dinner bill. It’s culturally important for them to feed their guests… I tried to grab the bill and pay as a gesture of appreciation for them welcoming me in, and every single Thai person almost jumped out of their seat to stop me from paying.
Anyway: awesome place, I highly recommend it.
dontstopbelievingman t1_jdarkbb wrote
This is how I felt as well.
I just came back recently, and I have been to a couple of places in South East Asia (Philippines, Indonesia, Singapore) but out of all of them I felt Thailand had the kindest people. Not to say that the other countries did not have kind people, but the consistency was there in Thailand.
So would definitely go again.
minor_details t1_jd9mtwx wrote
I've always wanted to go to Thailand and this has really helped cement that idea for me- I'm paycheck to paycheck right now but I have a passport, duo lingo, and an appreciation of buddhism, so someday I hope to save up enough to travel there. it looks beautiful but the way you describe the people is just lovely.

Cool!
No diving for me - ruptured eardrum from being stupid freediving - but my partner has done a liveaboard or two with Sea Dragon.
We’ve also stopped by a number of times on the way to ranong/mu ko surin/ko phayam. Love the andaman side :)
rick-james-biatch t1_jdcjzfz wrote
Freediving is awesome, but yeah, I tend to hurt my ears way more often freediving than with tanks.
Sea Dragon is a cool shop. Both my neighbors worked there. I was at BigBlue for most of my time there, but got recruited by Wicked for my last season.
Yes, the Andaman side has a lot to offer. Khao Sok rainforest was right in our backyard. I was seasonal, but I had some friends stay year-round, and just surfed through the rainy season.
Cannabat t1_jdty7rq wrote
When were you instructing/managing? Any particular reason you’re not doing that still?
I was in the country when covid hit and eventually made my way back to my home country. Eager to visit again.
rick-james-biatch t1_jduhklk wrote
I left in 2011.
I'd just turned 40, realized I'd planned to go to Thailand for 1 year and had already stayed for 8. Also realized I had no savings and if I did diving for another decade, I'd still be broke and my body would likely give out at some point. Was mulling all that over, and then my wife and I just decided over lunch one day that it was time to do something new, and that was that. We were gone two month later.
Covid hit that country hard financially. I have a lot of friends still there. Most live paycheck to paycheck, and when the divers stopped coming, it hurt. They're a tight community tho, and they helped each other out a lot. Most of the dive shops let staff sleep in the empty rooms, and everyone pitched in for food.

How was Khao Lak? I'm in Phuket now but have thought of moving up there for the surf and relative less touristy-ness.

xpatmatt t1_jdat0qn wrote
Do you know how the expat scene is up there? I'm guessing a bit smaller and more laid back.
rick-james-biatch t1_jdcp692 wrote
Its def a lot less touristy than Phuket. There is a surf shop in Bang Niang - which is one 'town' north of Khao Lak. I think the surf starts picking up about this time of year (April-ish). There is an expat scene, but it's mostly divers. Most know each other from working together. There used to be a bar called the Happy Snapper where most could be found, but I believe it's closed down now. Not sure where the new expat hangout is, but it shouldn't be hard to find.
