Gigantic Solar storms (G2 Solar storm)

It's hard to put into words just how breathtaking it was to witness the auroras during a G2 solar storm in Iceland. This photo near Hofn speaks for itself - the vibrant colors of the Northern Lights, the towering mountain, and the calm waters come together to create a truly unforgettable scene.

G2 solar storms are usually relatively rare, but they've been more frequent this year due to the sun hitting solar maxima.

I took this photo using my Sony A7 IV camera with a 14mm f1.8 lens, the storm was so strong that it caused the cell phone reception to drop for few minutes.

Let me know if you hare any question

This is awesome man. Nice work. What is the exposure?

untitledshot OP t1_jb9bo92 wrote

14mm f1.8 ISO 6400 1.6seconds - this is a panorama for three photo (same exposition, no EV bracketing)

Thanks for the response. If its a panorama, how do the light align so nicely? Wouldnt each third of the photo look different in the sky?

Great photo! What was your exposure time and iso like? I struggle to get both the foreground and the aurora in focus simultaneously

What camera are you using?

Thanks! So you focus on the mountain/infinity then take the shot?

I'm using a nikon d5300 with a sigma 18-250mm f/3.5-6.3 lens. Though up till recently I've mostly shot on a nikon kit 18-55 lens I've noticed the body doesn't handle noise well on higher ISOs. I've gotten some decent aurora shots but it's hit or miss as to whether I get the whole aurora in focus (as opposed to a "blob"). How important is iso when shooting auroras? Also I'm guessing you were able to get good illumination bc of both high iso and a fast lens right?

Was this recent? When?

Love Hofn. Was lucky enough to see an aurora in kirkjubaejarklaustur a couple months ago, first time ever for me. I also took an a7 iv with me! Great camera.

Absolutely glorious shot!!

Great picture! I’m so jealous. I was in Hofn a week ago and one of the days it was supposed to be a very strong aurora (kp7) with huge solar storms. We missed it completely because it was so cloudy

Incredible. I’ve visited Iceland and Lapland specifically to see the lights and failed both times, it’s a dream to see them like this

To be honest, you have to ready to sleep only little hours. I was up until 5am that night.

mango_carrot t1_jb9z9ef wrote

It was cloud coverage that prevented us each time, what made it more annoying was that each time they were supposedly at their brightest in the preceding days!

You’ll get there. Keep trying! It is so so so so worth it.

Pro tip when it happens: listen to the geese. When they start honking en masse, wait 9-10 seconds and then click your shutter. They see it before we do!

We didn't get to see them in Hof'n despite having the highest chance there. Great shot!

Such great luck. Rare to see a clear night in Hofn AND get such spectacular solar activity.

Use vedur.is to check the weather:Aurora forecast: https://en.vedur.is/weather/forecasts/aurora/. anything => kp3 is interesting. If you get to >kp5, be ready to not sleep to be in a clear spot, to enjoy as much as possible. If you are up north, even a kp1 can provide good auroras.

And if possible keep some night without hotes (so you can book last minute to get to be at a location with clear sky).

Good luck ! March is usually amazing for auroras!

Ever since I was a kid, it's been my dream to see the solar storm in Iceland, my dad would often show me National Geographic photography of them, igniting my fascination.

My in-laws are currently on a flight back to the US from Iceland. No northern lights all week.

Other friends went three weeks ago, no northern lights.

When I went 6-7 years ago, it was the best show in 30 years. Got so lucky. First week of October, 2016. They shut down the city lights in Reykjavic one night just so everyone could watch.
