But it’s a hard plastic? At least, it seems that way. It definitely does not feel like metal. But it’s very old, and may just be giving that appearance

If it's "very old" it's probably not plastic which has been prevalent in the plumbing industry for the past 20 years or so.

It's probably POT metal.
