Or light switch that has a built in light. Use this in our guest room so they are not fumbling around at night.

I bought Hue lights and had the app on my phone set to turn the lights off when I leave the proximity of the house, and turn them on when I return. I got the full kit (bridge and 3 bulbs) from ebay for around $90 and works well.

I got the Philips hue 2 bulbs the ones that chnage colors. They had a deal with the white ones that came with the bridge and not the color ones. That was probably my mistake. I should have gotten the bridge. But didn't want the color changing ones.

You should still be able to buy a bridge separately and connect those bulbs to it.
After looking into it, it looks like you can also use the Hue Bluetooth app if you want to control just those lights, and upgrade to a bridge later:

Get some lighted outlet covers. They let out just enough light that you can move around without bumping into things.

You can get an Amazon Alexa or Google Home product and wifi light bulbs and turn them on or off remotely or by voice when you are home .

Instead of a motion switch, you can get a door switch. Or you can put a motion switch right outside the door so it turns on when someone walks up.

I use a Hue set with the motion sensor, and set it to turn the lights on.

Since I put it on the front porch (so it would turn on the porch light), I had more trouble tuning it to not turn on from cars driving by and such than to generically turn on.

If you don't want to change switches, Hue bulbs and hub work fine. If you don't mind changing switches then Lutron Caseta and its associated hub. Either way you can trigger with a motion sensor, your phone, Alexa, or any number of other options.

The cheapest and easiest way would be to use a smart plug. You can program it so if you come home past a certain time, it will turn the outlet on. I have a lamp in our living room set up like this and it’s really nice to have.

That's interesting so it knows if you came home let's say past 9 and will turn on. But if you come at 8pm it won't? Whats the name of the one you have.

Yep, you can set a defined boundary around your home and make all kinds of rules around it. So when you enter the boundary, the smart plug will automatically do whatever you have it set for. You can make rules based on time, weather and even what other plugs are doing. I have ones from Feit that I got at Costco. I think it was 3 for $20. They are also great for Christmas lights because you can set them on a schedule.

I already have a smartphone but dont have a plug in light. I think motion sensor light bulbs are best can out in outside lantern and inside or have motion detector light inside.

I am very happy with my Phillips hub and accessories. Includes a remote (battery powered) motion sensor I put wherever and then configure it to turn on whatever light(s) I want.

I don't believe so there a hit and miss. I have them set routine to turn on at a certain time. Then after it does ot turns off have to turn on routine agin. Then when routine is on won't turn off at that time like what?

Also how is it better then motion sensor. You have to take out your phone and open the app to turn on the light. Or tell Google to do it instead you can be carefree after a tired night out half asleep no headache walk up and boom there is light from 10 feet away your 10 feet away and the light hits you.

It doesn’t sound like you have yours set up right at all. I never have to do anything with the app unless we have a power outage. It’s completely autonomous.

There's only one way to do it you set a routine on the app.

How do your turnit on then? by saying hey alexa or hey Google? It's much easier just to hit the switch.

Also, the freaking light has a default setting for white light. I set it this as the default, but then it still gives yellow light sometimes when turned on. The yellow ugly light it loves. I checked the app, and my default is the same, so why do this cuz it sucks but seriously have not found Philips useful at all and so pricey. And no function.
