Help with screw tightening

I'm putting up shelving in my garage. I've purchased some brackets and 4 inch screws and washers.

I did a shelf on one side of the garage which faces the exterior of the house without an issue. Used my stud finder and used my impact driver.

When I went to do the same on another wall that faces the interior of the house, I again found the studs with the stud finder and measured everything out.

When I began to drill, the screws would not tighten. They certainly latched onto something because I can't pull them out by hand. This happened to both studs on this same wall. When I pull the bracket from the wall, the screws can come out approx 1/2 an inch from the wall.

Any help would be appreciated.

It's possible you hit the edge of the stud and/or split it.

Try using a finishing nail to find the exact center?

You used a stud finder so you are on the wood guessing you didn’t predrill and studs split. It doesn’t take much to split fir.

Possibly an electrical wire, plumbing pipe or protection plate.

Any chance you have 1x2 wood strapping behind the drywall, and not full studs?

Do you screws have part of the shank with no threads? It's possible you haven't hit the studs and it's sliding up to the threads
