Drywall under removed tile

I’m removing the tile on my bathroom walls soon, and they pop off easily, but leave a small amount of damage underneath. I want to paint this spot, but don’t want it to look bad. Is there anything I can put overtop of the spots, or do I need to get new drywall? I’d rather not go new drywall if possible, but will if I need to. I didn’t know if you could put a layer of compound overtop and smooth it to paint it. Thank you!

Sometimes it's easier to to demo tile with the drywall/cement board behind it as well and just replace the drywall after.

Yes, use all-purpose joint compound. Paint the wall with a primer before applying the finishing coat.

Depends on the size of area and extent of damage. Pics would help immensely. When I replaced my backsplash I just cut everything out and replaced it.

You can do a skimcoat, might be easier just to replace the drywall though.

I did skim coat in kitchen and when I was done I was like, damn-I should have just replaced the drywall. I even had drywall 🤦‍♂️

If it not a high job, normally based coat then top coat and sand. You will need to know what you are doing though.

Some companies make a premixed product that you just apply 2-3 coats over after area then sand.

Skimcoating an entire bathroom is a job for pros. Trying to do it yourself will be very time intensive. Doable, but long, frustrating and extremely dusty.

You can't hang new drywall without knowing how to finish it. Google and watch.

You can apply compound to the whole wall. Apply a little thicker than needed and after dry sand with drywall sander (sanding screen with large holes). Wipe with damp sponge to smooth. You may have to fix some spots. This is a lot of work.
