> Valencia Luncheria took Guy by surprise, as he'd never had the Venezuelan tortilla called an arepa. The thick tortilla gets fried and then stuffed with both savory and sweet fillings. Think roasted pork shoulder, tender shredded chicken, ceviche and even Nutella and cream cheese.
>Special Dishes: Pernil Arepa (Pork Venezuelan Pocket Sandwich), The Morning After, Strong Island, Red Smitty

Love that place. Met the owner once, real interesting character

I find it weird that guy would never have had an arepa before.

Pretty tasty spot. Good empanadas. Great rum and coke.
MTGBruhs t1_j21o507 wrote
My guess is, Guy Fieri has not been to every restaurant in CT
DungareeManSkedaddle t1_j21qxf1 wrote
Curious- what makes one rum and coke better than another? Is it not just, you know, coke with rum in it?
phabphour20 t1_j21sf6y wrote
I’m a fan of good rums. I prefer aged but will go with a Coke periodically.
At Valencia they use Mexican Coke with real sugar. And they have a good ratio of rum to coke.

That used to be my go-to bar drink. It's all about ratio. It's like a straight shot in billiards. Should be easy, but separates the pros from the scrubs.

Pretty good but a bit overrated imo.
Prize-Hedgehog t1_j225nd2 wrote
You know which one isn’t the best? His own shitty restaurant in Foxwoods.

Both casinos have gone way downhill since the early 2000s. I don't even bother to go the for food anymore. There's better food at Paul's, Nana's, Abbot's, and Sift.

he became famous eating low grade slop at greasy spoons talking like Billy Mays in an late night infomercial while wearing sunglasses indoors and sporting frosted tips well after their popularity faded in the 90s... Guy's fast food restaurants are hardly a step above burger king quality. Not exactly the most reputable foodie celeb, and we're supposed to jump up and take note of his "favorite" restaurant in CT... yah I'll have to "go there soon"
tonysnight t1_j235y6b wrote
That place really is frickin delicious tho
madeinmars t1_j23eytn wrote
The wings are not bad there though.

Idk I've been to Guy Fieri's Foxwoods and they a pretty good Reuben. I wonder if he's been there.
MightyMason t1_j23i6ek wrote
I was surprised when it was good! Have very low expectations but it was great, overpriced, but great!
IMNOT_A_LAWYER t1_j23n9yj wrote
Yea, the restaurant itself was actually in a different location (about a few hundred feet from where it is now) in a super small spot.
If I had to guess Guy visited in 2009ish?
gswerve3 t1_j23nk5x wrote
Not disagreeing with your sentiment but Valencia’s is great
AhbabaOooMaoMao t1_j23olmx wrote
Yeah but is it the best, and does Guy Fieri saying so win the day on the matter? No and no.

He clearly hasn't been to every restaurant in CT

Great spot. Guy’s been on em forever.
mynameisnotshamus t1_j240vtr wrote
Agree on the sentiment, but Guy is by all accounts a really solid dude. He set up a charity and did a ton of work to help restaurant workers during the pandemic. He gives a lot of his time and money to help others. He’s allegedly a great father too. I used to think he was super cheesy and kind of douchey until I found out more about him, heard others in the industry talk about him and and heard some interviews.

Not even the best restaurant in Norwalk.

I wasn’t impressed with the food there at all. The fries weren’t even hot. The service was extremely slow.

Pretty good spot. It was a lot better when it was just a take out hole in the wall IMO.

You're right, my answer is unjustly snide and a bit harsh, in a more innocuous joking rather than hurtful way; I have no hate for Guy, hell I used to enjoy him on DDD. Imo his diet, public persona plus ostentatious and showy signature style erodes and partially undermines his credibility as a food guru. And his flavortown mall and delivery based restaurants just aren't good, sorry. His charity work and helping others is a totally separate topic and is mostly unrelated to his credibility and competence as a food critic; I see him as more a grandiose personality, celebrity and entertainer versus a truly knowledgeable food critic or chef like gordon ramsay.
