Every time I’m here I can’t help but wonder WHY so many (easily over half) of the “higher end” homes have not one, not two, but upwards of 3 different barriers around them. A stonewall, with privacy fence on top, a line of evergreens, AND a black chain link behind those? What could the reason for this be? Any one on its own or group of two seems fine to me, a chainlink to keep the dog in, evergreens for privacy, but then a privacy fence & a stone wall? Does anyone have an explanation as to why so many of these houses have all these “layers” around them?

You know, I almost didn’t make this post bc I figured people wouldn’t know/or would crack jokes in the comments when I’m merely curious about the design feature- but being accused of being a thief is not one I had on my bingo card.

Probably added over time. Walls were prob original and maybe not in tip top shape overall so they added a fence at some point

Stonewall is aesthetic, fence is for privacy, evergreens to make the privacy more aesthetic, deer fence to keep animals out. I would think security would be more like gates, cameras, window locks, full system wired in the home, etc.

Well the stone is decorative, the trees are for privacy, and the chainlink for animals/intruders.

In CT in general, the stone walls originated as property lines created by the rocks farmers would dig up from their fields (the land was full of glacial rocks, still is). This informed the style of New England architecture for the next X-hundred years, to the point where you see them added to modern homes to fit in with their surroundings. And anyone with a dog will tell you, there aren't many fences that can keep my dog in aside from a good modern chainlink, that boy can clear a 4 foot stone wall and not even break his stride.

As a dog owner, I agree. I figured dogs could be an answer but it just seemed so prolific I wondered if maybe there was some other reason I wasn’t aware of. Someone said to keep deer out and i as someone who has deer eat half of what I plant I think that makes sense too

Because they don’t want people nosing around, especially the scum bags that pass through between the Bronx and Stamford looking to pull a “heist”. The Petit family is a perfect example of why they want their property secured like Fort Knox.

Any wildlife makes sense, usually expensive home = expensive landscaping. I am sure no small amount of the fences are for 'security' against would-be home invaders (especially with the Greenwich NIMBYs) but anyone who is serious about their security knows a fence is just a mild deterrent, but sometimes that's enough to discourage crimes of opportunity.

Because they’re rich and have lots of nice things worth stealing. Because many of them are celebrities or high ranking CEOs or chairpersons who value privacy. Some of them may be paranoid and want to protect their children and pets, and avoid break ins. I would imagine they would have more security features such as cameras and security.

I know someone who works for a celebrity actor (no, I don’t know who) in Greenwich and they have to punch in like 3 different codes to get past multiple checkpoints to enter the property and house. They aren’t allowed to take photos, not even a selfie, on the property. Very protected.

All of these answers are good, and add in pool fence requirements to explain why chain link feels like it's everywhere in Greenwich. They usually want an "endless lawn" effect with the pool floating in the center, which means having to fence the entire property or a major chunk of it.

This is a guess but I’d say the stone wall is original, and marks the property boundary. It’s probably also against some ordinance to remove them because they’re historical. The trees are for privacy. I’m not sure what the chain link fence would be for though. Anyone in Greenwich can afford an invisible fence for their dogs, it won’t keep out an intruder, and they’re kinda ugly.

Stonewall is original and adds to the character of the property. Evergreens for privacy and the area looks nicer with the more trees and vegetation. Usually any other fence is for pool fencing requirements and or security.

Tree lines is an affective barrier against noise. They absorb and reduce road noise better than wood or Stone fences. Stone wall barrier create border and some privacy depend how high. Ives seen meshes barrier in upstate NY but not sure what they are use for other than preventing sludge splashes on the grass.

This is the right answer, pool fencing. Until this year if you wanted to not have a fence directly around the pool, you needed chain link or a type of upgraded deer fencing around the whole property.

Now, if you have an autocover you don’t need the fencing anymore.

I didn’t know that about trees necessarily but it does make a lot of sense now that you mention it. One of my neighbors once upon a time was upset about another neighbor down the street clearing his wood line and I wasn’t exactly sure why but I do recall the noise level coming from that end of the road increased after he cut down all of those trees.

Yes spot on - it’s to essentially keep the deers out that shit everywhere and eat half the plants. The fence which costs a fortune (and isn’t your chain link type - too social housing looking ;-)..) isn’t for the dogs as we have invisible barriers if needed for that. I have tonnes of outside and indoor cameras and when I had a false alarm the police took 3 minutes to get to my house :-) We have a nice sized pool house for the orgies ;-)))))
