Are there any programs to help an individual pay for health insurance? Person in question is 27, good health, no children and makes about $30,000/yr. Connecticut Husky D income limit is $18,754.

We looked at the insurance exchange and while the monthly premiums are low, the out of pocket of $4,000 to $6,000 and only partial payments make it unaffordable. Those rates were based on answers to questions like how many nights per year will you be in the hospital (who knows that?).

Your best bet would be to speak with a broker to see what the best plan would be. You can find one through Access Health CT. There are some subsidies for folks to help bring down the cost if they qualify. All the plans that I've considered have very high deductibles like what you mention, but I'm also a lot older and have a higher income.

Definitely speak to a broker. We did and our cost for family of two went from $1700 a month down to $123/mo. They know what they're doing

Yes, I second this. I wasn’t eligible for Husky at one point because I made like $25,000/yr or something, but was able to get a good insurance through Access Health. It wasn’t free, but it was affordable. I think it was ConnectiCare, maybe the silver plan or something?

Call AccessHealth. Being unable to qualify for Husky, the next best will be Connecticare Silver. With that income, he/she will be eligible for up to $490 tax credits. This lowers your premium as a whole to less than $50 per month (this is what you pay to have the insurance).

Doctor visits/hospital visits are a guesstimate and only apply to extra costs if not applied. Your best bet is to get a broker. They’ll help explain everything and break it down for you.

Apply on Access Health, you'll get help paying the premiums and may even get help with copays and deductibles.

When I used a broker, he pushed me into more expensive plans so his commission would be higher. The people at Access Health can help you.

There's also the CoveredCT plan that was implemented this year by the state. It's basically the same thing as Medicaid / Husky insurance except for folks at a slightly higher income. You have no out of pocket cost and the insurance covers the same things as Husky.

Income limit for household size of one: $22,540; household size of two: $30,485... See the website for more specifics: https://portal.ct.gov/dss/health-and-home-care/coveredctprogram

Access Health CT can tell you if you're eligible for this plan just like they do for Husky and marketplace plans.
