It's not about darkness - it's about the rural nature and the fact that there are 700,000 acres of largely undeveloped land. It's much like it was when the Native Americans were inhabiting the area. The satellite photo is supposed to highlight the rural nature. The very corner of NW CT is considered about the "darkest" place in CT.
