Hey all, I’ve lived in CT my whole life (Hamden, Middletown, Hartford, and now Newington). My wife and I want to move from our current home to a larger house for eventual kids, in-laws staying over, etc. And obviously the housing market is tough right now. Our top choices like Glastonbury and West Hartford are so expensive for so little property. I keep coming across absolutely stunning homes in Bloomfield that are actually affordable and check all of our boxes for “must haves.” I know the schools have a very bad reputation but I’ve also heard that reputation may be overblown (potentially due to racism and the sordid history of why it’s a black majority town).

Does anyone live in Bloomfield and have any thought? Anyone with kids in the school system there?

Reputation is definitely overblown, pretty quiet town. Could always send kids to West Hartford for school.

I can't speak for the schools. But everything else is great. It's very underrated as a town.

In 2019 62% of West Hartford students were at grade level in math and 70% were at grade level in English. In Bloomfield those numbers were 31% and 41% respectively.

You can review the data from various districts, including 5 year trends, here. This data is all pre-pandemic. I’m sure there is Covid data out there but I would not expect that the pandemic would foster greater equality between the school systems.

Eesh yeah those are bad numbers for Bloomfield.

I moved from Lewiston, Maine where the numbers were similarly poor. Now I live in Avon. Its like night and day.
