Does animal control accept volunteers? I didn’t see anything on their website about it

Yup. Just give them a call or go in person. They have applications there.

Don’t thank me- just killing two birds with one stone.
If I’m going to go for a walk and get some exercise, I may as well do it near the pound and take a dog with me.

dontbthatguy OP t1_ir4p9l1 wrote
This is what animal control has written with him.
Impound #2 "Dave" large (just over 100lbs) Pitbull Mix, male neutered, white with liver spots. We estimate his age at about 4 or 5 years old.
Big Dave is a very powerful dog so we are looking for a potential adopter who can handle him physically. Small animals and children are not recommended due to his size, and he will require some training on a leash.
Please contact Animal Control directly for any inquiries.

It's a pitbull (mix), it'll be fine with them until one day they aren't for one reason or another. You'll only find out when you hear the screams and see the blood.

Pit bulls were bred specifically not to be aggressive with humans. They were originally baiting dogs for large game routinely handled by people.
"Snapping" is not characteristic of the breed, nor is any behavior a result of just genetics.

Not everyone wants a Pitt or Pitt mix or have the ability to care for a large dog. The problem being that’s most of what these shelters have. People can get high and mighty on their high horse about only adopting while not accepting that sometimes the dogs they have at shelters is not suitable for the people looking.

I've had German Shepherds since high school. (15 year old female then. 1st GSD in 1974.) People cross the street when we walk by. I've NEVER had an aggressive one. Yet, they're considered "bully breeds"
Darondo t1_ir7a70n wrote
People are just naturally more cautious around an animal that is capable of overpowering them, and rightfully so. I don’t know your dog, and it costs me nothing to just avoid any potentially negative interaction, even if the risk is low.
If a troubled chihuahua with a shit owner attacks me, no big deal, I’ll live. If a troubled pit attacks me I can kiss my ass goodbye. I don’t think anyone is personally judging you or your dog when they cross the street, some people just figure why chance it?
politerats t1_ir8o0le wrote
I am scared of most dogs, a fear that came from childhood seeing another toddler get attacked by what I remember to be a pretty small dog but it did quite a bit of damage.
My boyfriend's family has a Pittie and two German shepherds and they've really helped me in getting over my fears. Some of the sweetest dogs I've ever met. The pitbull loves hugs and face pets. She lives for her nose to be stroked, it's like her power down switch.
blackerjw6 t1_ir3tjvp wrote
Not sure why I'm being downvoted. There is plenty of evidence proving this. My wife works at the ER and over 90 percent of people mauled have some sort of pitbull derivative to thank for it.
Please check my pro pitbull reference for a history refresher. https://breedingbusiness.com/what-were-pitbulls-bred-for/
fylum t1_ir6jgk8 wrote
Because it’s not a particularly well-defined breed, and a lot of dogbites get labeled “pitbull” if the dog is vaguely mastiff.
Strat7855 t1_ir7n6gc wrote
No, they were bred for the ability to be violent, which I don't think anyone can dispute they have. It's a very different thing than being violent.
They were also bred to be docile with humans because yeah, when you're breeding for physicality, you probably don't want that creature turning on you.
Behavior is also an extremely complex thing and can't be reduced to an either/or attribution, too.

blackerjw6 t1_ir7vpkd wrote
I don't think he is acting ignorant. The pit bull was bred to fight bulls chained to a stake in a pit. Hence the name Pitbull. It was one of the most violent blood sports in history. Oh nobody questions the idea that a Labrador loves swimming and retrieving. Nobody questions the idea that a German pointer naturally points at things it's interested in. Nobody questions the idea of a herding dog naturally herding sheep. These dogs were all selectively bred for those specific traits. But when there's a dog that was selectively bred for one of the most violent blood sports in all of history, people like you come to their defense and say they're breeding doesn't matter. Only bad owners exist. You are delusional and biased in your opinion.

Iv walked this big oaf a handful of times now and he seems like a great guy.
He comes out like a wrecking ball and is a total doofus on the leash for the first 100 feet or so if his walk. All he wants to do is bite and tug the leash. But he settles in and is good.
He’s powerful obviously but doesn’t try to over power you when walking.
We can’t have him meet people or other dogs while on a walk but he seem to do well when passing them. Just seems curious.
He was found as a stray in first week of July and has been there ever since.
I have a video or two of him so please dm me if you want to see it or learn more.
