First, I would like to send love and light to my Indian neighbors celebrating Diwali! I do have a question that I'll post here because I don't want to offend my neighbors. For the past couple of nights around 1:00 to 1:30 a.m., my neighbors have set off bright, shooting fireworks on their condo patio immediately outside my bedroom window. I typically go to bed at 11:00 so both times have been very unsettling with both the noise and the smoke. That said, inclusion is very important to me so I am happy to suck it up if someone can let me how much longer it may go on. The family did not set off the fireworks last year during Diwali so I don't have a point of preference. I've never lived in a community where people were setting off fireworks on the patio in the middle of the night for any celebrations so trying to figure out the best neighborly path forward. Kind suggestions are welcomed!

Be an adult and go ask your neighbors. There's nothing offensive about asking how long it might go on. Setting off fireworks in the middle of the night is obnoxious even though celebrating one's culture/religion is important. I'm sure if you had a conversation you could find a middle ground that works for both of you. And you might even learn something or make new friends in the process.

What is it about other cultures and not respecting neighbors? My foreign neighbors do this too, sometimes until 3am. Like I'm all for inclusion as well but what the fuck.

"I'm all for inclusion but fireworks at 1am at night once a year is a huge inconvenience for me. Suggestions welcome."

Lmao

There are more fireworks on July 4 all over the place coming out of every corner of town. That didn't bother you, right? This is what we call subconscious racism and bias. Buy a hate has no home here sign and stick it outside your door immediately.

I have many Indian neighbors, none of whom are setting off fireworks. According to google it says it is 5 days. Your neighbors are disrespectful as far as the timing and yes it would be the same (disrespectful and inconsiderate) for any holiday at 1am.

Ask your neighbors, not randos on reddit.

Actually NO. Thankfully, people are not setting off fireworks during 4th of July in the middle of the night especially on condo patios outside my bedroom window! I'm not sure where you live, but thankfully that's not my reality. The 4th of July fireworks are hosted by the city and end by 10:00 p.m. You're welcome!

Well I gave you the right approach. Go talk to your neighbors. Ask them about their beliefs and customs. Look for a compromise. There's nothing insensitive about that. People can learn from each other without being perfectly politically correct. I can assure you, as long as you're open minded you won't offend anyone.

As a person of color, I find your comment to be highly offensive and seriously irrelevant. Racism has nothing to do with respectful behavior and coexistence in communal living situations. Injecting racism into things that have nothing to do with racism does more harm than good to people of color.

My neighbors are actually very nice people. I don't know them well but we are cordial. I definitely plan to reach out to them today, but I really want to make sure that I hit the right note. Unfortunately, we live in a world where people are extremely sensitive especially around cultural issues so the post is about finding the right approach that does not make either me or them feel uncomfortable for an important holiday that they celebrate.

Persons of color can be absolutely racist too.

Asians (esp Chinese and Indians) in general are extremely discriminated against by other POCs - so no, you don't get a pass for being a racist because you have another skin color.

Happy to share that this case is CLOSED! Just spoke with my neighbor who apologized and shared that the fireworks are over. I offered that there would be no problem if they lIt them before 10:00 p.m. which would be fine. Thanks everyone who offered helpful and sensitive suggestions. They actually played into my approach for resolving the matter without harming my neighbor's since of belonging in our shared community alongside my own. Peace and joy!
