I believe you have to pay tens of thousands of dollars to get your store or attraction on those signs. I used to work at a chain restaurant just off of I-80 when I was in college. (This was in PA). We were not on the sign informing drivers that they could get off and stop at our restaurant. When I asked the GM he said that they wanted a lot of money to be on that sign, like over 50K. Which, in hindsight wasn't that much for the restaurant. However, it was the first time I realized you had to pay to advertise on those signs.
PricklyPeteZ t1_jdjvhuz wrote
They also have certain stipulations to be on there. I worked at a chain in Enfield and they had to put a pay phone in and start serving breakfast to get on the sign on 91.
This was around 2010 so I’m sure they’ve relaxed those payphone rules.
ctnutmegger t1_jdjt95f wrote
As u/mgr86 noted below, it's pretty expensive to get a business on that sign. However, if this is Exit 29 on I-95, then that means it's in Bridgeport. That means it's close to:
- Beardsley Zoo
- Seaside Park
- Webster Bank Arena
- P.T. Barnum Museum
- Captain's Cove Seaport
- Saint Mary's By The Sea Park
- Discovery Museum and Planetarium
- Bass Pro Shop building with the bowling alley, indoor waterfall, etc.
- Housatonic Museum of Art
- Bridgeport History Center
- Fayerweather Island Lighthouse walk
- Bridgeport Farmer's Market
- Mongers Market
- Tours of historic homes in Black Rock
I know that this sub loves both the "ThErE'S NoThInG To dO In cOnNeCtIcUt" and also the "Bridgeport bad" tropes, but there is a bunch to do within city limits. (I didn't even include other items in Fairfield County or New Haven County.)

Good list.
You're right that the picture is 95. It's the sign for attractions at exit 29 if you're traveling southbound. But the sign is right after exit 30. Try map coordinates 41.175205, -73.153221
From your list, I would guess the sign was intended for Bass Pro, but maybe they wouldn't pay to be on the sign.
The attractions sign for Exit 28 northbound, which lets off to the opposite side of the same overall area, has one listing : Shoreline Star Greyhound. Which hasn't had greyhound racing for a while but maybe still does off track betting.

The way they close the Westbrook one pisses me off. They block it off and put a lot of effort into blocking it with barriers and barrels, so you can't even use it to pull off the highway. It's fine if they want to close the building, but what's the point of closing the entire parking lot area?

There are parts of the 10/405/5 freeways in LA that every single morning take 30 minutes to go 5 miles if you're lucky. LA isn't even the worst traffic in the country either, apparently DC is quite a bit worse. The fact that you even referenced an article calling out 35 minutes of traffic on a 30 mile corridor as being bad just shows how disconnected from reality some CT people are when it comes to traffic.
