Hello all, I am fairly new to the state and just have a quick question. I am in the process of getting a new catalytic converter for my car. That said I want to order it online to save some money but it will come after April 16th, which is when my emissions test is due. What happens if I do not have my emissions done by the 16th? Does my registration become invalid? Fines? Thanks!

Nothing happens other than you pay a $20 late fee for your emissions test which you pay online at the DMV site. If you don't have your emissions up to date you won't be able to register or renew a registration, so make sure your emissions is done before your registration expires.

So there’s no time limit? I just got my car registered like a month ago. So I would have two years to fix this issue with nothing besides a $20 late fee? Or is that like every month $20?

The $20 is the total penalty.

So … do I even need to spend $1600 damn dollars to even fix this then if the only penalty is $20?! Car is already registered and it expires in two years per state law. Kinda surprised if this is the case.

If you don't fix it and pass emissions you'll never be able to renew the registration for the car

Gotcha makes sense. But my registration for the two years will be fine though? Like my plates wouldn’t show up as failing emissions and I would get pulled over for not passing?

Yeah, reg. will be fine. I also posted a link you can read. I forget how much it was, but there used to be a maximum amount you could spend on repair, and they'd give you a waiver if you still failed..

Yes. I never do emissions on a car until I'm sure I'm going to keep it beyond registration. Return the cat. Wait until your almost due then trade in. The new car will have to pass from the dealer.

If you need the catalytic converter to pass emissions than technically you have 2 years to get it fixed as you can't renew the car registration without having passed emissions.

Make sure you order the correct cat. Some cars have many options based on the state it was manufactured for.

Yeah that definitely is something I will consider, thanks.

No problem. It sucks to learn the hard way...after it's installed, and isn't compatible with the computer.

Oh, and make sure you get one that weighs 1000 lbs because they love stealing them in CT. 😂

Funniest converter theft I remember was the junkie who either passed out under the car or got knocked out by the object of his desires.

I believe the Emissions test is also $20/CASH only— but the last time I did one it was 2013 so rules may have changed.
The $20 late fee can be paid online though.
