I have just recently discovered an incredibly delicious cheese steak up near Chaplin, Connecticut. There's a van parked on the side of route 6, it's plugged into a truck with a generator and you would never know it's there.

This place is called Hideaway Steaks and Stuff and it's run by two guys, one seems to do the business while the other is the cook. I've never had a real Philly cheese steak, let's make that clear right now. However, this is by far the best cheesesteak I've ever had, and at the very least competes with everywhere else I've tried in Connecticut.

They also have some other solid things on the menu, but there's about six things total and then hosmer soda.

Highly recommend this place to anybody who likes cheese steaks, they also offer them in chicken and mushroom.

Please tip well.

Are you one of those 2 guys?😉

LOL was totally expecting this comment. No I'm actually not, I've got a new job in the area and googled food nearby and it was the closest thing to come up...

Turns out they're really nice guys though and the cook actually got in a bad accident the first day I was there, so now I'm emotionally invested.

Most importantly, it's been a month and I've eaten there three times already....try the hot dog too!

Had to google Chaplin, no idea it was a town in CT.

Also it looks like is a literal van and not a food truck.

Literally middle of nowhere hahaha. And he's it's a VAN not a food truck this is a converted vehicle. I imagine it does move, but they don't.

Definitely worth a 30 minute drive. If you are going to Norwich the Sherman St bridge is out, you have to enter from the Backus Hospital end of Lafayette St.

I drove an hour when the norwich location opened, it was still worth it.

I really like the ones at Blue Cactus in Norwalk (though the meat is chunkier than most Philly steaks I’ve had). They also have Wiz and homemade hot sauce. Super nice people too.

They had a restaurant in Fairfield and were really good, but closed during covid.

Their explanation for closing was weirdly political and they were berating the community lol

Phillys in New Haven and Norwich is the spot. Owner is from Philly and knows what he’s doing. Plus the people who work there are the best, at least the New Haven location. I haven’t been to Norwich.

G’s Steak’s and Grinders is legit. Dude does it right. slices his own ribeye on-site. No frozen crap here. Burgers are good. Chicken is good. Man puts out good food. I am there weekly.

I’m throwing another one for G’s steaks. Like passion said it’s technically Hartford but right on WH line. Great cheese steaks!

2

PalpitationParty8082 t1_jecdkoy wrote

I second this. Republic was my go to for a steak & cheese back when I worked in that area. I would also recommend Four Dad's pub in Granby.

I would consider both places to be really high quality, so they're on the pricier side ($18ish last time I went)

Philly native here, if they call it a “Philly cheese steak” usually it’s not a good time. if someone compares them to Genos/pats, That’s also a red flag (only tourist go there). The biggest problem with CTs cheesesteaks and hoagies are the rolls.

That being said I have nothing helpful to add lol, I get my fix when I visit home. If anyone from Philly knows a good place I’d love to try!

The Philly grill in Waterbury has been good. Have had a couple misses there more recently. But durning the height of COVID I realized my wife and I grabbed a cheesesteak from there six weeks in a row. Of course, you have to goto Waterbury. But you can get right back on 84. It’s a block from the mall.

I grew up just outside of Philly and can be a bit picky. My wife has really been enjoying the one she’s been getting at brgrko in hamden lately. But I am a bit turned off by any place calling it a steak and cheese.

The Philly Cheesesteak is just about the only thing I ever order when I get a sub. Deli Unlimited in Guilford makes a great one, as do Ray and Mike's in Hamden and Joey Cals in North Branford. The best one I've ever had is from Shoreline Prime in Branford. Not a traditional Philly cause they use steak tips instead of shaved ribeye but holy fuck, it's an unreasonably good sandwich. They put a garlic butter aeoli on it too. Worth a trip.

iCUman t1_jeb9giz wrote

Traditional Philly cheese steak doesn't come with wiz. It's most commonly served with American or provolone cheese. But it is actually delicious, and if I find myself ordering a true Philly, I have been known to get one with wiz.

The truth is that on the very rare occasion I find myself in Philly, the pork sandwich or stromboli always wins out, because no one can even come close up here.

4

jaredsparks t1_jecwigz wrote

I'm not sure about that. I've been to Gino's in Philly. I could swear they use Velveeta.

3

BigComfyCouch t1_jedijsf wrote

Ginos and Pat's are a tourist trap. Pats gets credit for inventing the steak sandwich, and Genos gets credit for adding cheese. Beyond that, they're probably 2 of the worst options to choose from.

If you're ever in the area again, hit up Dalessandros.
