Looking for some input on which streaming services will give me the best bang for my buck with local channels and live TV, currently I have Comcast, and T-Mobile
What local channels and why do you need them?
Fair point, I usually watch fox, NBC, ABC, but as I search my options I see most of these are included in various streaming companies, just trying to ease the shock of transitioning to a new way to view TV being with Comcast for so many long years ( Ever since they where maryland company with A/B sides)
Okay do you watch Fox News or the Fox network?
If you have Comcast they will send you a Flex box for free. That has Peacock. Any show on NBC is on Peacock.
For other shows, google them and see which platform they’re on. Take The Good Doctor on ABC. It’s on Hulu. So is The Amazing race. So google whatever show + ways to watch.
For news, I don’t know about other networks but channel 11 has Nowcast online so you can watch it on your phone or tv or whatever.
We have Netflix, Hulu, Prime, Disney+. Hulu and Disney is a bundle I think it is about $13/month. Netflix is about $10/month. Prime is included if you have Amazon Prime.
If it’s Fox News you’re talking about I don’t think you can have that and not have cable.
Don’t know if you have Fios available, might be different with them. Here in Sykesville we have the choice of Comcast or nothing so we choose Comcast. Just Internet (with the “free” Flex box”) is $149 each month. It would probably be cheaper to have the cable added on with home phone and Internet but fuck Comcast.
Hope I was at least a little helpful.
Thanks for the good info
You’re welcome! I’m also Gen X, if I could do it you can do it. It was intimidating at first but now I can’t imagine going back to cable. I think it’s because we went from three channels as kids to hundreds of channels and it’s all we’ve known for decades.
This is true.
What is flex box? I’m a comcast internet customer, can I request one if I think I can use it? I got rid of cable but want to watch local news and PBS. The basic cable for just local stations and PBS is like 30 a month.
Is there anything worth watching on local channels? Or should say; what is there? Genuinely curious what they have.. Cut the cord 5 years ago, and honestly have no idea what NBC, ABC have to offer.. But I've never missed it. I got an antenna, but have checked it out twice, found it was all garbage and never used it again, lol.
Netflix, Amazon, and HBO have more than I can ever watch.. *shrug.
Cut the cord years ago and never looked back. The best flexibility comes from getting an antenna for the locals; signal is good in the area unless you’re in an apartment or something. If you’re wanting cable channels go with slingtv for cheap or YouTube tv for more cost but a less buggy experience. But I stopped getting cable chans altogether, just subscribe to Netflix/Disney/hbo max/whatever for the month they have the show you want playing.
Awsome, thanks for the info, I honestly didn't know about YouTube TV till I started looking around, is it any good, it seems popular.
Never tried it myself but I’ve heard good things. Like I said I don’t watch cable channels myself anymore.

I never imagined I could cut my Fios TV cord, but we did a year ago and don’t regret it. If you are not in an apartment, get a roof antenna, and you can get all the networks from Baltimore and DC. There was a website I used to pick the direction.
We do the Hulu Black Friday deal every year, changing the email addresses between me and my H every year. Been doing this for 4 years now. The Black Friday deal is 1 or 2 per month, but it does have commercials. After years on DVR (since TiVo) it’s annoying. But tolerable. Hulu has most shows a day later.
We also have Amazon prime, Netflix and HBOMax, the later on a free deal. We had a year of discovery+ from Fios internet.
Thanks for the input
FIOS internet + Hulu Live
Do you have a newer TV? You should be able to get some over the air locals
I don't get how cutting the cord is any cheaper. You still need internet ($$) and still need streaming services ($$). When you add everything together it doesn't seem like you are saving very much.
At least I'm my case I pay $50/ month for fios internet only, and paid $105 or so with cable (and that was lowest possible tier). And had Netflix and Amazon in addition anyway, since that's better shows! Sometimes pay for Hulu or peacock in addition, which might not have done with cable, but it's fairly minor. We cut the cord when we realized we hadn't turn the cable box on in over 7 months. I can't watch "live" TV", on demand or nothing..
with the quick math it' saves about 100$ monthly, so dunno just running the numbers.
what does the $100 include?
It "saves " realized after i posted.
what do you have that saves $100/month?
You know that's a good question, maybe if I take a look at Comcast and see what extras I can remove.
It's really a personal thing - and for heavy live tv watchers, you don't always save money - since there are pretty good bundle deals and having multiple streaming services starts to really add up. Figure out what the cost of internet alone is, subtract that from your current rate and that's your budget to spend on streaming services.
Make sure you check with your cell phone provider to see if any services are already provided for free with your account. Verizon's higher tier unlimited plans come with a few services.
One small savings is the modem; with bundled services you often can't purchase your own router, but when you go just internet, you usually can. That means about $10 a month towards a much higher end router.
A lot of the local stations are still broadcast over the air. If your house has an old antenna, some work amazingly. You can also purchase newer style ones. In Columbia, often the "roof top" antennas are mounted in the attic, so see if you already have one. It's not a great solution, but if you're like me and just want the broadcast for a few things a year, it's better than paying for streaming services.
Remember that you don't need to keep paying for your services every month. Cancel in the off season, or between series you follow.
