I appreciate that people want to share their thoughts and support for the biking community here in Cambridge, but in many ways the way people have been going about it has brought out the worst in us. Many of the posts I've read here over the past several months are toxic when it comes to the discussion of bicycles. There is a clear divide to the point where it's no longer healthy or productive.
Today, I was driving near the BU bridge and I was stopped by a bicyclist, who then came around to my car window and he spat on my face and rode off. I literally have no idea why. I didn’t say a word to him. Did he think I broke a bicyclist’s code of some kind? I really don’t know.
I want the Cambridge community to be able to work together to come up with solutions to problems like traffic fatalities, and global warming, but a lot of the vitriol I’ve been reading over the past year is counter to that. It’s been building walls not bridges.
Down the road I’ll taper back in moderated discussions around city transportation issues but for now we’re going to take a break so we can hopefully come together on other issues that we share more common ground on, or are frankly just more fun.
Feel free to DM any thoughts or comments.
