I'm expecting to be working outside a lot in the future, and willing to bet that every now and then I'll get rained on for it. I need something effective AND durable, something that might be able to withstand getting caught on sharp edges every now and then. Any ideas?

Look at hunting equipment, especially beater style clothes. Designed for getting caught on all sorts of vegetation.

Cut resistance? Idk you may have trouble with that. For rain resistance that’s easy look for gortex.
