I looked at the link online where a) no one in the photos was using one, and b) it doesn't look like one would even go over it with that design.

It’s an advertisement for a pillow. You want to show the pillow! And a pillow case is fabric over a pillow. It fits the shape. It’s not a rigid structure. Mattress ads have people sleeping without sheets all the time!
