I have a home office chair that’s about 10 years old. It’s starting to wobble and I worry it’s going to fall apart soon. According to Google, office furniture should be replaced about every 10 years. But that’s factoring in day-to-day use, when I only work from home a few times a week. So my thinking is this chair is probably not as durable as it needs to be.

Can anyone recommend a durable ergonomic work chair with adjustable armrests?

Edit: my dad is a larger person and sat in it several times. This might’ve contributed to the demise of the chair. Should a well-designed chair support larger frames?

Herman Miller chairs can last a lot longer than 10yrs. You can get replacement seat pads and other parts. We bought a pair 9 years or so ago. One has had a new seat pad the other is as-new. Not really any different now to when new.

Have a pair of second hand Herman miller aeron chairs at home. Over 10 years on and they function and look as new.

Knowing your budget would be helpful, they get pricey pretty quickly. I bought a Steelcase Think chair a couple years ago and I love it. Very comfortable, lots of adjustments (armrests adjust up/down and slide forward/back) and it’s held up great so far. Replaced a generic $150 chair I’d had for several years which squeaked a lot. But I work from home and my company offered a discount so I was willing to spend a fair amount.

I have owned multiple expensive office chairs. The three brands that I recommend the most are Steelcase, Herman Miller and HumanScale. I would suggest sitting in a few models of each brand as they all have pros and cons. There are also many versions of the same chairs, but the level of adjustment raises the price. If the price for a new one deters you, you can find many office liquidators with a Google search. Many have eBay webpages, but if you can find a warehouse close to you, I suggest going to see the chairs in person as they can vary from almost new to used to refurbished. FWIW, after using multiple chairs from these three brands, I have found the Steelcase Leap to be best for me. I used a preowned leather one for about 5 years before treating myself to a brand new one. I like this chair the best for me as I can lean back with my feet up and still get the support I want. My friend hates my chair and only likes his HumanScale Freedom. This is a very personal decision, but in the models that come with an optional headrest, I suggest always choosing that option. Also, you mentioned chairs for bigger people. I know the Aeron chair does come for an option for larger people as I actually had that one in my office at one time.

Steelcase chairs are fantastic and they make them for really big folks. I think their normal models are rated up to 400 pounds and they've got a larger version than that.

Keep in mind there's a ton of fraud in "big and tall" office furniture. More than once I've found a chair ostensibly rated for like 350-400 pounds that had a base and casters rated for 200.

Most important: How many budget do you have??? And how about your height, weight?

If you want own again a chair experience with you in more than 10 years, Steelcase Series 1, 2 can do it. They offer 12 years warranty and 400 lbs capacity weight.

Series 1 (~450$) if you are short

Series 2 (~800$) if you have avegare tall

Every office chair in the history of the world claims to be ergonomic, so remove that as a purchase factor from your brain. Serious...not being cute.

Herman Miller, Steelcase, Humanscale....there are others and the search engine will help you find them. Which one is right for you? No one can answer that as looks and budget and options play a role.
