If the plastic latch breaks you're screwed though. I've thought of 3d printing a guard ring to make sure that the lock section can't hit the ground when dropped.

Not a bad idea...even just use a hose clamp zip tie add some pool noodle

If the latch breaks you could also just put a pip pin in the hole, just complicates handling a tad.
