So I did test this against a Yeti. The guys at work all use Yetis and they SWEAR that nothing is better. Well one of our distributors dropped off some swag and I got my hands on a Yeti 14 oz coffee mug and a 20 oz tumbler identical to the ones the coworkers have. Time to test....

The Yeti handily lost even having the advantage of 4 oz over mine. I checked the temp every hour for six hours. In the end the Yeti was 48° colder. Both starting out at 208° with the Yeti finishing at 122° and the Zoji at 170°. The Yeti coffee mug is handy for around the house and I'll use the 20 oz for the odd occasion I forget my Zoji at work.

ETA - Both were tested having sat out the night before with the lids off. Ambient temp was 68°. Before taking the temp each hour each was inverted once to eliminate any cold spots as I suspect that the Yeti loses most of its heat through the lid.

So what your saying is that after 6 hours your zoji was still too hot to drink? Mostly kidding, but really, some of these thermoses are too efficient at this point, you want to consume coffee around 135ish F.

The zuri has a smaller opening and a smaller top surface area as well as its taller and not as wide.

I assume all of that plays apart with why zuri is BY FAR the best at retaining heat. The heat basically only escapes from the top and zuri has the least amount of liquid exposed. Also their lids are way more robust and thicker than everything else.

My Zuri I can put tea in it at about 4:45am and at 5:30-6pm its still very nice to drink.

I had to buy worse ones if i wanted to drink them on the way to work or around the house because even leaving the lid open wasn't good enough to have them cool off fast enough to a drinkable temp.

The zori also has a significantly smaller amount of surface area on the top that is able to lose heat.

I've spent too much time trying to figure out the perfect and best tumblers\insulated containers.

The old school stanley\thrermos's are also the same with the tapered top but zori took it farther since with "only 160oz" you can easily make the cup a bit taller, bit harder to make a 30oz one even taller.

My zori big container (1L) holds hot water for significantly less time even if i keep the lid closed the entire time compared to my normal one but the lids are both just as absurd. However the 1L is much much wider.

I've also used mine for five years now and adore it.

They use a layer of gold foil in their vacuum void, which reflects something called blackbody radiation. It's near-infrared light that anything much above absolute zero emits, and is the main way to lose heat once you take conduction out of the equation.

You definitely have to make sure your beverage is at drinking temperature when you put it in - I just brew my tea to allow for three ice cubes and it's at the perfect temp for the next eight hours.

It's also important to clean the lid properly, which seems a chore but takes about one minute. I like to use unscented denture cleaner with mine, just disassemble and drop it all in, wait two hours or so and rinse.

They also make excellent food jars and amazing high-end rice cookers.

21

batcake42 t1_ixwdgk4 wrote

5

Butlerian_Jihadi t1_ixwee1o wrote

Not sure about that, kind of doubt it. Blackbody radiation is when something gives off energy as photons due to its heat. Things have to get worse pretty hot for us to be able to see it (think a glowing fire poker or the ember of a cigarette), but that radiation is still being emitted even if it's below our ability to perceive it.

by the way, their customer service is absolutely amazing - if you lose a cap, they'll ship you one for free (even if you tell them it's your fault). if you suspect their product is defective, they'll go through troubleshooting with you and once confirmed defective, they'll give you a new one.

I never put it in the dishwasher. I use denture cleaning tablets as they work the best. I've tried everything from ice, salt, lemon juice, peroxide baking soda in all forms of combinations. You name it, everything but soap. Denture tablets work the best so far. Fill it full of hot water and drop in two tablets. Let it soak overnight and brush out in the morning. Sparkling. I also throw my seals in there too. And I cap it with the stopper so it cleans the bottom of it. Don't seal it because it'll probably blow up.

I'm a truck driver and heavy equipment operator. This thing has taken some abuse but it's still going strong!

Butlerian_Jihadi t1_ixwajzo wrote

Denture tablets are the way.

Thermos funk tends to be from volatile oils and a layer of casein from dairy. The dairy layers up, provides a home for oils which get rancid and gross. Denture tabs were literally designed to combat biofilms exactly like these.

I do one tablet in the mug and one in a cup with the lid gaskets, soak a few hours and a quick hit with a bottle brush. Keeps the mouthpiece sparkling, hasn't damaged any of the gaskets.

Depending on the model you can order replacement parts (cap, gaskets, etc) to keep it going and looking strong. Unfortunately I lose mine a lot of the times but I have one that's almost a decade old. I have other Zojirushi products that are 20+ years old. Definitely a buy it for life company

I own a similar one for 5 years, the heat retaining is great. My only complain is the stains on the lid. I only drink water with it, but the plastic part (I guess that’s silicone) on the lid that’s attaching the opening has black dots overtime, and I can’t wash it off somehow. Both vinegar and baking soda don’t work. Then my friend who bought together with me told me he has the same issue. I’m wondering if it’s just us, and anyways to clean it up?

2

home_cheese OP t1_ixz8gdx wrote

I use denture cleaning tablets. Fill with hot water, drop in all of the seals with two tablets, place the stopper and top up so the water is touching the bottom of the stopper. Let sit overnight and brush out in the morning. Though sometimes I put all of the plastic pieces in a separate container so they're fully submerged.

You could give that a try.

waytooo t1_ixzby7s wrote

Thank you for the tips! I will give it a try. I was about to buy new one but this concerns me. If it can be cleaned up, definitely will buy more.

I’ve got two of these (one I lost and later found, and the other I bough during the former’s hiatus) and can confirm. These things are almost too good. I now cool any hot beverage off to ideal drinking temp before putting it in the Zojirushi and set off on my way.

Once I filled one up with coffee in the afternoon (maybe around 4pm) and stuck it in the fridge so I would have cold coffee the next morning. Well 7am rolls around and I open the thing up and the coffee was still fucking hot.

I’ve had hunting trips where I wasn’t able to enjoy my coffee during my sit because it was too hot the entire time.

If I had any complaints it would be that the finish can flake off over time, especially if you put them in the dish washer (yeah yeah yeah I know you’re not supposed to put the main body in the dishwasher but I do occasionally), but it’s just stainless underneath. Throw on some stickers, problem solved.

Haha all the comments about this thing being too good are so accurate. It’s super nice to bring up to the ski hill and pour out some cups of spiked cider or something like that at the end of a nice day on the hill, but yea even after a day on the mountain I wouldn’t want to drink straight from the thermos. Pouring it into a cup and letting it cool down is pretty much the only way to use this magical piece of kit.

Mine is super beat up from using it underground when I worked graveyard shifts mining. Having a piping hot cup of coffee 6 hours into a 12 hour shift in a dark whole is a luxury unto itself.

home_cheese OP t1_ixzgoj5 wrote

MSHA approved.

1

AlastorAugustus t1_ixzhr7d wrote

Haha more like S&S burn risk. The amount of ridiculous things I’ve seen MSHA citations for in my 11 years underground, I wouldn’t put it past them to cite a thermos lmao.

2

home_cheese OP t1_ixzjvey wrote

Those guys are something else. Whenever they rolled into the quarry I worked at all work stopped. You went back to the office and didn't talk to them. Some guys were pretty chill, in and out in a couple hours. Others would absolutely scrutinize everything. Find the dumbest shit to write you up for. That hook and winch you've been using for the last 20 years to pull and move rocks stuck in the jaw crusher? Been good all those years but now? Getting a write-up now!

The place I work for now used to be paired with a quarry but split into two different companies 6 months ago. No more MSHA!

2

AlastorAugustus t1_ixzkhyc wrote

Haha yea it’s pretty much the same underground. Most of the actual safest ways to do things are complete MSHA violations so any time an inspector is around is a great time to ‘take 5’ lol

I have three of these. One time I made tea and brought it to work and forgot about it. 12 hours later, when I remembered it, my tea was too hot to drink.

I've had multiple baristas take pictures of them because they were the only mugs they have ever poured coffee into and couldn't feel the heat coming through.

I love these things, and I've also had mine for years.

I’d never heard of this brand until a couple weeks ago when the in laws got a new Zoji coffee maker. I thought it was an off brand from Amazon. Now I know better and have ordered one of these to replace my daily use Contigo.

I have the same thing! I love it, but I think the vacuum is failing after taking one too many tumbles down a flight of stairs after falling out of my bag... It's the best way to burn yourself on the way home with the tea you brewed in the morning.

Butlerian_Jihadi t1_ixwb2ty wrote

There's a company that makes a sort of heat sink... A oval made from high thermal index alloys, plated with gold. Soaks up a good bit of heat without diluting anything. Not enough heat for my boiling tea, but it gets my coffee exactly where I want it. I think Coffee Joulies is the brand.

Or the xx brand 16tpcg

one is much easier for me to google for later as its exact.
