And still works perfectly

Random question: is this the same Remington that makes ammunition now?
ThatDarnScat t1_iy4t502 wrote
Yes, they started making typewriters after the Civil War concluded and the demand for guns dropped. Pretty interesting history.

Wasn't it after WWII?

Far more than that today with all the machined parts.

I had no idea it would have been such a BIG ticket item ...

Technology is a continually deflationary industry. The first color TV's sold at retail in 1955 cost $12,000, adjusted for inflation to modern money.

Ya, fair. I would have figured that this was the kind of thing that would be relatively widely accessible, but at that price, it's definitely a bigger purchase than I realized!

Beautiful machine, I know nothing about typewriters but it looks like there’s some weird ghosting/smearing on a few portions of the sample. Most notably near the 0 (zero) and the “la” in inflation. Is that normal? I really like the dollar sign with the double slash, though; that seems kind of unique.
VerbingWeirdsWords OP t1_iy50ij3 wrote
Ya, I think it just comes with the territory. Imperfect key strikes might leave a little smudge

I think inflation calculators are often crazy. My father was a detective with the Houston police department in 1958, and his gross pay was right at $172/month.
I know this because my mother just told me about graduating from secretarial school in 1956, having to buy a similar typewriter (financed it for 3 years at about $2.55/month), and here and dad talking about the money…
In real money, I think these would be something like $3k today.
She still has hers.

My daughter bought one of these for $25 at a thrift store. I took it all apart, cleaned, and oiled it. It works like a charm now.

Good luck finding replacement ink ribbon! They are beautiful to look at

Ribbon is pretty standard and still available. I replaced it a few months ago, and the machine types beautifully
