Following advice of previous posts I recently purchased the LL Bean shearling boots only to read today that they are not great on ice. I'm heading into my second New England winter and need to be able to walk my dog on ice and in deep snow. My feet get cold very easily. I have these Muck Artic boots and I find them to be just okay. My feet don't feel particularly warm.

I've read that the Sorrel boots (like LL Bean) are not what they used to be. The Baffin boots also get mixed reviews and the ones that are good for extreme cold are not great for walking.

I need something mid-ankle so I can keep the snow out. I don't want to get cleats because I'll probably ruin my floors accidentally. I'm willing to spend up to $300. What would you recommend?

UPDATE: I got the Baffin Chloe boots and they are amazing! My feet are super warm while walking the dog during this 2022 Arctic blast.

Hand warmers in your boots 🥾 Or buy seal skin boots if you really have the money…

I’ve been eyeing some Merrill therma chills, but they seem poorly constructed

Baffin for sure. I even hike in mine in the winter. I still like to wear wool socks with them, but I wear wool socks all year round.

If you are a sheet of sheer ice though, even the best boots will need some shoe chains. In the city, YakTrax did the job for me, size up when putting them over snow boots. For hiking, Hillsound makes an excellent microspike, but I would absolutely not wear them in the city or with pavement.

As a Chicago winter alumnus it’s more about the socks than the shoes. The shoes/boots need to do well against repelling water/snow, but even the best boots aren’t going to do double duty on warmth. Invest in some good wool socks (darn toughs for example). I’ve worn similar boots to the LL beans with good wool socks for hours in sub zero wisconsin and been fine. Without the socks I’d have been done in under and hour. Just my thoughts for what they are worth.
