I’ve had mine for 13 or 14 years. Only ever swapped the brush heads.

Same. But I had to change the batteries after the first ones died in 2 years. But that was 15 years ago.

Same! My friend gave me his old E series over 10 years ago.

This is a question of patience / persistence. I had to swap them twice on warranty, #3 is working like a charm.

My Oral-B Braun has lasted since I was in middle school. I genuinely can't remember ever using anything else.

My mother has had the same Oral b braun since I was a little kid. It has both the toothbrush and a water jet tooth cleaner thing, but the tooth cleaner doesn't work too well anymore.

I went through 3 Sonicares in 2 years. And 1 Oral B for 12 years. I’m going back to Oral B

Oral B battery powered. $6.00 on Amazon and Walmart. Takes one AA battery. Use the lithium kind.
nomanches82 t1_ive5low wrote
This right here. We have been using them for close to 10 years, plus they’re awesome for travel (which we do all the time). Plus, our dentist said that this with the soft head is about the best toothbrush you can get.

I’ve had better luck with oral b so far.

I’ve had the $40 dollar sonicare for 5 years. What is failing?

For me the motor gets gradually weaker after the first or second year. It's not immediately noticeable but when I replace it I notice an increase in power.

Ah I see. Thank you for the insight

Are you taking off the brush part and wiping the components dry after each use? I find that if you keep that gap area dry, it lasts for years. Otherwise, the gunk builds up and leaks into the insides.

We've had an oral b for 6 years. Holds it charge great and is used 4x per day after all this time. Get your heads from Costco. They go on sale once or twice per year 10 dollars off.

How do they fail?

I can’t speak for OP, but mine just stopped charging one day and eventually died about a week after that.

Wundermung t1_iv49hsf wrote
for me, the actuator that connects the brush head to the motor breaks. I think it's a design flaw. The costco 2 pack goes on sale for $70 from time to time. I've used the warranty both from Philips and costco to keep me going.
miningmonster t1_iv5p3ou wrote
Good idea on buying from costco
nacespeedle t1_iv4fxvm wrote
If your sonicare is failing search youtube for a fix video. Generally the motor gets slower and dies because the magnet or the coils have come loose in the mechanism and are touching. It's a simple fix but you have to open it and you probably need a precision screwdriver set. I've had one going on a decade. had to re-gap the mechanism twice in that time.

I've ben using a battery Oral B for about 15 years. Not the same one. Two, I think.

Mine stop working every 2-3 years too with 2 people using it. I don’t mind too much as $40 isn’t that bad.

Call customer service if it’s been within a year. I ordered online, still had a receipt, and had similar issues. They sent me a brand new one. Obviously not bifl but decent enough for me to continue to use.

mattrussell2319 t1_iv45fmc wrote
Oral B lasts a long time. Just be sure to get the models with the round heads, those are the ones my dentist specifically recommended, and said anything else should be avoided.
donttouchtherolex t1_iv4m6m3 wrote
The cheaper Sonicare models just aren’t built the same as the more expensive ones. The higher end ones seem to last for years and years. I’ve had my current one for about 8 or 9 years and it was about £140 at the time. It’s never had any issues and still holds charge for about 10 days of use twice a day. I don’t do any maintenance on it other than clean it now and again.

I can't comment on which ones are BIFL but I looked though my purchase history and can list the ones that I have bought and how long each lasted.
Almost always it's the batteries that fail. One of those Waterpiks on the list I wired in new corldess phone batteries about every 6 months.
I would think a lithium-ion battery toothbrush would probably last longer for that reason. I can't remember but I think the last time I was looking for lii-ion toothbrushes the only thing that was available were those Amazonified clones that come up on the first page when you search for anything on that site.
Oral B ProVantage 1500 - 1yr 8mos and still working fine
Waterpik SR3000 - 2yrs 2 mos
Sonicare 3 series - 2 yrs
Waterpik Sensonic - 5 yrs 6 mos
Waterpik Sensonic - 2 yrs

My Oral-B managed to pinch and bruise my lip so I can't recommend that one. Going with Sonicare.
5spd4wd t1_ivfxbtn wrote
I remember when the Oral B battery toothbrushes could be bought at Walmart for about $2.99. That was right before Covid and the supply chain problems. Still, $6.00 now is still a great bargain for a toothbrush that will last years & years.
