I was thinking that an important part of BIL is being able to repair/upgrade your devices. Like, I'm buying a sewing machine and then after 2 years a gear is broken and I need to replace it. If I built the machine myself, it would be much easier for me to replace the gear since I have all the instructions about how to put all the pieces together.
But I've failed to find any such products/instructions. I know that this used to be a thing, so is it just that this approach is lost or only me failing to do the right search?

To me BfL does not mean won’t ever break, it means designed to be repaired. Old singer sewing machines are a great example. Yes they do break, but they are a fairly simple machine and a skilled person can repair them, same with a good pair of boots or a toaster.
