With the success of My Escher post, I thought I'd try another classic! Da Vinci's Masterpiece, Mona Lisa! It's amazing what you are able to do in the sand, you can really bring the museum to you!

How did you make the table make that

Alex_Sisyphus OP t1_iwd6jzs wrote

The table reads SVG and THR files. All I have to do in illustrator is make sure all the lines are connected (like a contour drawing), export it and the table will play!

Oh ok I thought you were doing it by hand, but this is cool too

Anyone else read that as syphilis table?

I read it as “marge Simpson” - imagine my disappointment

I did too. I was very confused why the OP was messing around with a syphilis table and more importantly what was a syphilis table is.

Yes. It was interesting to see the movement patterns of syphillis

Yeah, I always read it like that as well. Has to be the worst name for a product ever. Unless it has some other meaning that I don't know about.

Lol sisyphus is an ancient myth from the Iliad, amongst other places, of a man punished for trying to cheat death by every day having to roll a heavy boulder up a hill only to have it roll back down over him crushing him, for all of eternity. He will never, ever get the ball up the hill.

I assume it’s a joke about the little ball rolling thru the sand.

Absolutely Fabulous.

How long did it take to do that?

3

Alex_Sisyphus OP t1_iwgny74 wrote

Making it? I'd say about a day with testing to make sure it drew the way I wanted it too. The table takes like 30 mins to complete this drawing.

Edit: Somehow this didn’t come through when I posted but it definitely does not have the same feature set as pointed out.

Alex_Sisyphus OP t1_iwgqrtl wrote

It's also a knockoff of the table I use : ( It stole the idea from the original artist, Bruce Shapiro - they're not affiliated as all.

dblmca t1_iwev95o wrote

That's very cool.

Have they solved the issue with the grinding noise of the ball crunching over sand?

I've always wanted a table but the noise... omg the noise. Heh.

Alex_Sisyphus OP t1_iwgomha wrote

The tables are super quiet! I have mine running right now and I don't hear a thing. If I was in a totally silent room, I might hear it.

Amazing! Do you publish your tracks to the community? I need this for my table :-)

I do! I have a whole bunch on the community! Look up alexandra : )

I have the cheaper homedics version. Love it.

Alex_Sisyphus OP t1_iwgpc4n wrote

Hey, to each their own! I personally love the customization features like being able to make my own tracks in the sand and the multicolor lights. Plus I think the wood looks snazzier than plastic for my home.

Only reason I didn’t get yours was because it’s really expensive. But it does look nice.

I hope so! I always thoughts her little smirk was cute, but I guess the sand wanted her to smile more 😅
