you get color from the oxidation that happens wile the part is hot. Argon protects from that and with perfect argon coverage you should get no color "silver looking welds". the more heat the more argon coverage you need and you can play with that heat/argon ratio to get color or no color, or somewhere in-between.

I do own a welding hood, and I've made a few sturdy pieces, but I have zero training in welding. I'd like to get into TIG(edit: almost entirely recreationally, at least at first. Don't want anyone thinking I'm building bridges , or some shit). Are the colors your fill rod, or your pool, gas mix, something else?
I don't anticipate getting a whole lot of time to practice, but I probably have most of the standard equipment at my disposal.
